CEOs: Be Mentally Tough For Business Success

Mentally tough CEO or business ownerWith every job, with every company, with every industry there are special business skills and knowledge you need to succeed. If you don’t have those specials skills you’re not going to be as successful as you would like to be. This blog post talks about a key factor to business success CEOs cannot buy: Being mentally tough. It’s something business leaders and others who excel in their professions either have or don’t have.

If you’re an athlete, whether it’s baseball, football, tennis, track and field, golf or any other sport you’ve got to have the strength, agility and speed necessary to win otherwise you won’t be successful. You also have to be smart. The days of thinking, for example, that football players were just drafted onto a team because of their athletic ability are gone. To play football you have to be extremely smart due to all of the league rules and regulations in addition to the individual team playbooks. It’s amazing what a football player needs to know.

Or consider a prima ballerina – the gracefulness, the level of endurance, the years of study, devotion and sore feet all for the sake of the arts and each performance. The ballerina makes the dance look so easy but it isn’t.

What about a welder? Or what about a computer programmer? Every job takes talent, skill and a level of liking what you do.

CEOs, presidents and business owners are amazing too. You need to have the talent and the skills to run a business. You need to understand the business you’re in. You need to understand how it all comes together including prospecting, marketing, sales, employee relations, customer service, accounting and legal, to name a few. But it’s not enough for true business success.

You can do or understand all those things and still not be as successful as you would like to be. Because if that’s all you’re doing then the competition is going to get ahead of you. Perhaps even take business away from your company. As a CEO, president or business owner, it is a fact you don’t want that to happen!

The key factor to business success for CEOs, presidents and business owners is being mentally tough.

You can have all the skills and talent in the world but without mental toughness, it won’t come together as you would like it to.

It takes will – drive –determination.

If you can’t…

  • Take the rejection when making a sales call or presentation
  • Deal with difficult employee problems
  • Handle customer situations
  • Are a clock watcher and can’t wait till it’s 5 o’clock to leave work every day
  • Ignore important paperwork or follow up with co-workers and customers because you’re “too busy” with other things…

Then why are you in business?

Every business day you must face issues, problems and challenges to make it all work; to put it all together. Some you can solve. Others perhaps not so quickly or at all. Sometimes you have to take a different course of action to make it happen.

But if you’re not mentally tough, then nothing much will happen. That only leads to stress. Then more stress.

Successful athletes, ballerinas, industrial crafts people and techies are all mentally tough. Otherwise, how could they do what they do?

To be mentally tough you need to be…

  • Ready for the game of business every day
  • Able to bounce back when things don’t go as planned
  • Get up each morning and do it again and again and again without boredom or a bad attitude
  • Ready to solve whatever problems or challenges come your way
  • Make business decisions
  • Face what needs to be acknowledged, good or bad.

Remember for business success: It doesn’t matter what you did yesterday. It only matters what you do today.

Whatever challenges, problems, stresses you have in your business day, being mentally tough is a key factor to your daily success. It’s not something you can buy. It’s something you develop within yourself.

It’s not enough to just have the skills and the talent at what you do. You have to be able to face the day and make it right. No matter what comes your way.

Leaders lead.

It’s about having attitude stamina. That’s being mentally tough.
