Dream The Unattainable Business Goals

CEO Entrepreneur Dream the unattainable business goalI’ve been advising CEOs, presidents and business owners for over 30 years to dream the unattainable business goals. I’ve stopped counting the exact number of years. Why? Because it doesn’t matter. What matters are the people and the results.

I’ve enjoyed every minute of being a confidante to the ups, downs, the every day decisions and the once in a lifetime business opportunities. It’s been quite an adventure helping people dream the unattainable business goals. I’ve known many diverse businesspeople and helped many hundreds CEOs, presidents and business owners.

It’s given me the opportunity to draw some conclusions about business that other people don’t have because I’ve been given the gift of insight to really understand and know these CEOs, presidents and business owners as people. Not just what they say or not what the public relations people will say about them, but what they’re really thinking about deep down inside about business.

One of the questions that always comes up is how did they become so successful? How did that happen? Because when you look at business, you’re looking at different degrees of success.

  • There are people who just can’t cut it. They just can’t make it. They’re in business a short period of time and they’re gone.
  • There are other businesspeople that it’s unlikely they’re going to survive for 5 years because again, they just don’t think it’s worth it.
  • Sometimes it’s the economy.
  • Sometimes they just don’t want to put up with what all businesspeople put up with.
  • Then we have the people that are in business for a long time and become very successful. Why? Why do they become successful? Is it because they have superior intelligence? No. Most of them have above average intelligence. They’re not PhD candidates. They’re not the smartest people in the world but they understand people. They understand business. They understand the needs of the customer. So I guess in that way they are some of the smartest people in the world. Just in a different way.

But what’s the one factor, the one thing, that made them more successful? So they’re not just running a little, tiny company making a living month to month. They’re running a really nice sized, medium to large privately held company making significant money and employing many, many people.

What exactly is that? What do you think it is?

CEOs And Entrepreneurs:

Dream The Unattainable Business Goals

Well, let me tell you what it is. Those people dream the unattainable business goals. When other people are saying it can’t be done, they say: Watch me! When other people say, you’re crazy, nobody has done that, you’d be foolish, they say: Watch me. When someone says to them, it’s a bad economy, the economy is terrible, what are you going to do? They say: I’m going to put my head down and I’m going to use all of my experience and I’m going to do what needs to be done. I’m going to be successful, just watch me.

A business plan comes together. No matter what the business conditions are, whether they’re good, whether they’re bad, whether they lose a major customer or whether they lose a key employee, whatever it happens to be, they become successful because they dream the unattainable business goals. These businesspeople don’t believe they can’t do it.

Now, the same people, in talking and strategizing with them, I always find out that this probably isn’t their first business. It’s not their first business attempt. They’ve had other business attempts that didn’t go so well. Maybe they sold out, maybe they went broke, maybe they just decided that this wasn’t the market they thought it was and they get out of the business. But the one thing that happens, they bounce back again. And all of their friends or relatives are saying, you know, you failed at this, why would you try it again? But they know they how to dream the unattainable business goals.

They set the goals for themselves, they don’t stop until they reach those goals. And once they reach those goals, what do they do? They reach for more goals. It’s never ending. It’s not like they ever stop and say that’s good enough – it’s never good enough.  It’s always about money but it’s not about money, it’s about reaching potential. It’s about proving you can do something. It’s about satisfaction that you get from being successful.

Oh yeah, by the way, did I tell you it’s about the money too?  But when people go into business just to make money, they’re not going to make significant money, they’re not going to make a million dollars or more – at least not certainly every time but most times they won’t succeed.

Why?

Because you have to have these three words: will, drive, determination. You’ve got to have the guts for it. You’ve got to say, you know, I can do things other people can’t do. I’m going to learn what I need to learn. I’m going to learn from every experience. I’m going to do what needs to be done. I will prevail.  And they believe that, and every single day they work it.  When they’re having a bad day and that day is so terrible that they wonder how they can go on and do it another day, they come back the next day, they come back the day after that with the right attitude and they do it again, and again, and again.

The above paragraph is really important, so I would suggest to anyone reading this, to go back and read it again; at least, one more time.

So, will, drive, determination – being able to dream and know that you’re going to meet those goals, because when you’re dreaming, when you have that unattainable goal, maybe you won’t reach the top goal but maybe you’ll get 90% of it. But when you don’t think of it, when you aren’t dreaming, when you don’t know where you want to go and how you want to get there, and most of these businesspeople when they started, by the way, didn’t know how they were going to get there, they just knew they were going to get there.

So, it’s up to you. Do you want to be fabulously successful? Or do you want to just make a living as a CEO, president or business owner? Nothing wrong with making a living. Maybe that’s what your needs are. Maybe you don’t want to do anymore than that. Maybe you have a lot of other outside interests or obligations. Maybe you like to go hiking or golfing or you’re a sports fan and those things are more important to you.

The “It” Factor In Business

But true businesspeople have ‘it’. You know the magic ‘it’?  You can’t describe the magic ‘it’.

It’s that movie star on the screen that just comes right off the screen. That’s what film studios looked for during the Golden Age of Hollywood. It’s that person with an instinctive personality, when they walk into a room, people know that they’re there. Businesspeople have to have ‘it’. They have the ability to create an atmosphere and a business and a success that’s beyond other people’s imaginations. Somewhat like the Eveready Bunny: … just keeps going and going and going (as Frankie Valli describes at the end of Jersey Boys when asked about the lifetime singing success with the Four Seasons). A more modern day example: Taylor Swift very much has the “it” factor.

How about you? Are you going to do the same thing?

I’m always open to having an interesting business conversation with CEOs, business owners and entrepreneurs. I want to hear about your success. I want to hear about how you’ve reached the unattainable business goals. Or even discuss exactly what are your business goals?
