Change.
Nobody wants – or really likes – change. Many of us would rather stay in our “comfort zone”.
In downtown Delray Beach, FL, there is a clothing store that’s been there for at least 50 years. It’s a rather large store with two floors, located on a prime real estate corner. It’s really like a small, old fashioned dry goods or department store and carries all the latest styles of 50 years ago. They probably own the building, own the inventory, have absolutely no debt and that’s why they can stay in business. But for the rest of us, this is a time of vast changes. (Update: Since originally writing this post the store referred to is no longer in business. The prime real estate spot was purchased and completely remodeled inside and out to be more in keeping with Florida retro-modern architecture and shopping trends.)
Either we change or the competition will take our business.
Changing our thoughts in the way we do business is not always something easy to do.
Change is a problem for everyone because in everything I’ve read about the human mind, it appears that the unconscious mind doesn’t like change. It wants to keep everything just as it is. So your unconscious mind will do everything it can to convince you to keep everything status quo. Of course, the same is then true with your employees having the same reaction to change.
As a CEO, president or business owner you need to have a vision for your company.
Leaders lead.
- Think about what you need to do.
- Get rid of what doesn’t work.
- Do what does work.
When the people around you tell you it’s never been done like that, your response needs to acknowledge their feelings yet be firm, stand your ground and convince them that although new ideas are hard to implement, they are necessary for future success – both on an individual level and for the company. Get past the fear of the unknown with implementation and feedback till it becomes part of the company strategy.
Before you change anything think it through. Don’t change just for the sake of change.
Change what needs to change to successfully run your business and be profitable.
To your success!
