The Destruction Of American Business: Health Care Reform, Cap And Trade

I don’t want to sell anything here.  I just want you, as a business person, to really start thinking about the proposals this administration is putting forward.  It is apparent that majority of politicians whether Democrat or Republican have one goal in mind and the well being of the country is not their first priority.  Their first priority is to raise money and get elected again.

It’s curious… Have the majority of the people elected to office in the House of Representatives and the Senate ever had a real job?  Or did they ever run a company and understand the basic concepts of business?

The United States of America is a business certainly with a social component thrown in.

I am going to let you do your own research on the current potential legislation before Congress but I do want to make a few points.

If you have a business and you increase your costs significantly you need to get the money to pay for those costs somewhere.  Usually you only get it one of two ways:  increase sales or increase prices.  If the current administration wants to add 47 million people (and that number is up for debate depending on how you want to look at the numbers) to health care there’s only one of two places they can get the money – raise taxes or reduce services.  From past experience, any time the government passes new legislation they always tell us what it will cost but it ends up costing many times what they projected.  So the other alternative will be to manage care and deny care to people who are in need of it.  In other words, a system of rationing health care.  Do you really want to wait six months to see a doctor?  Do you really want Grandma or Grandpa’s health care to be denied because they are considered too old?  Do you have any plans to stay young forever and not get old?  Because when the money isn’t there to pay for all of this and they start to reduce health care you could be the one that doesn’t get the necessary and timely care.  I could go on and on about how health care will neither produce the desired results or be “budget neutral” as they keep claiming.  Health care certainly needs reformed but the proposal being put forth will financially ruin the country and not provide the promised results.  The health care proposal is also pushing us toward a nationalized health care system.  Is that really what you want for you, your family and your employees?  Do you really want the government involved in your personal health care decisions and choices?

Cap and Trade:  We only have one planet.  We all breathe the same air and we should all focus on having a cleaner environment.  But again this piece of legislation is ill conceived.  It will raise the manufacturing costs of everything in this country.  As a matter of fact, it will raise the energy costs and since it takes energy to produce everything… it will raise the cost of goods and lower the standard of living for all Americans.  The country will see jobs going overseas in droves.  China, India and many other countries will continue to pollute and not install the expensive equipment to eliminate the pollution.  Therefore being able to produce their goods and services cheaper, create more jobs for their country, not our country, and once again the American worker and American industry will pay the price.  Clean air is important but let’s have legislation that makes sense so we can breathe cleaner air and also continue to have jobs to feed our families. So ask yourself:  Do you really want Cap and Trade to affectively change the way you do business and live your life?

If ever there was a time in recent history to become politically active, the time is now. Let your representatives know they need to create sound legislation that is beneficial to all of us that is based upon the principles that have made this country great for the last 233 years.  How could this great land suddenly be so wrong and everything must change seemingly overnight?  What’s all the rush?  They say it will all help to fix the economy.  Do you believe that political spin?  The numbers and facts don’t add up.

The 2010 elections are coming up but it may be too late by then to reverse enacted legislation.  That’s why you need to have your voice heard now.  Change for the sake of change, to ram agenda’s through before it can be stopped and changing the way this country functions and operates is serious stuff that affects all of us, including your business.

We need people in Congress who are concerned enough to create legislation that moves us forward and helps us all to prosper.  Talk to your senator, your congressman, your business associates and everyone you know. These are highly serious issues that will change the America you know and one day, believe it or not, you will look back on this time and consider these to be the good old days.
