In Business: “Yes” Isn’t Always The Best Answer

As people we all want to be surrounded by friends.  We have the need to have people around us that make us feel good and appreciate us for who we are.  As humans we like to interact with people who are similar to us.  Have the same interests; likes and dislikes. And will not be in conflict.  But as a business person, as the CEO, company president or owner of your business, you want to surround yourself with the smartest, most knowledgeable, most talented people.  People that will help you take your business further.  People that will get the job done with enthusiasm, self-motivation and a can-do spirit.  People that believe in you as the company leader and visionary.

But where do you go and who do you trust for advice, feedback and credible counsel in your company?

Though you want to always have the least number of problems and conflicts in your business, the last thing you want to have in your business is a “yes” person.  In other words, someone who always agrees with you on every issue.  Who is afraid to speak up when they see your business and you going in the wrong direction or not making the best business decision no matter what the issue is.  These are the same people who don’t tell you about a developing or potential problem instead they try to cover it up – or worse yet, place the blame elsewhere.  In other words, they tell you what they think you want to hear.  And that doesn’t serve you or the company.

Every person around you needs to agree on one very essential and critical point: looking out for your well-being, the company’s well-being – and not be thinking about their own best interests such as getting the next raise or job promotion.

Sometimes that means people in your company being brutally honest and forthcoming while you listen to words you may not want to hear but need to hear because it keeps your perspective in focus and the company moving forward.

In this recovering, yet still uncertain and volatile, economy the business decisions you make are more critical than ever.  The business information and answers you receive from the people around you in the company are vitally important but must be straight forward, accurate and always in the best interest of the company.  Otherwise, how do you know what is really happening?  How can you make the best business decisions?
